Does the Magazine Industry Have a Future?

  • People with a higher income may be more likely to buy a magazine/subscription to a magazine as they have more money to spare on commodities
  • Magazines will need to target a younger audience now to maintain a dedicated audience into the future
  • Magazines need to become more up to date if they want to maintain an audience, most magazines are out of date immediately as they are published however as people are used to immediate information in the digital age they need to keep up with the demand.

Research

  • Many magazines publish their content online which eliminates any desire for readers to buy a copy, some magazines/news sources have incorporated paywalls on their online content as an alternative source of income
  • The internet has created a society with a shorter attention span for content, often preparing to see short snippets of information one after the other rather than one large chunk of information
  • Magazines need to update their content so it is more appealing to today’s society, including more content like this may make magazines seem more ‘worth the money’ when competing against free online content
